    [GERMAN]
Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte von Martha und Henry. In Bildern. Die Jugendfotos. Trauung.

  • Nominated in top 10 of best 2015 photo books by 1000 Words editor Tim Clark

Taking Off. Henry my Neighbor has been included in the top 10 photo books of 2015 by Media Space associate curator and 1000 Words editor Tim Clark.

Dutch artist Mariken Wessels has made it her business to tell the story of a real-life husband and wife, their failed marriage, sexual frustration and voyeurism via an extraordinary archive of found photographs, collage and sculpture. Taking Off. Henry My Neighbor allows us to enter into the lives of Henry and Martha, who embarked on a collaborative photographer-muse project together. The result is a corpus of 5500 intimate photographs, creepily categorised, labelled, notated and cross-referenced by Henry, which led to the relationship ending and his self-imposed exile. Edited with scrupulous care to build an incomplete narrative, the book is not simply a biography or catalogue raisonne of amateur nude art but something more compelling, dispassionate and altogether unsettling. At least, it is a complex portrait of obsession and the private secrets of those living next door, constructed through Wessels’ unique brand of storytelling.

  • Photo-Eye Book of the Week pick by Mariken Wessels

Mariken Wessels selected Les extravagantes by Leendert Blok from Editions Xavier Barral for Photo-Eye's Book of the Week. The book gathers flower portraits made in autochrome by Dutch photographer Lendeert Blok who, since the early 1920s, has been experimenting with colour photography and the use of the panoramic format. Blok comes as close as possible to texture and develops a singular approach in which each flower becomes sculpture.

  • Sequence 1 - Dutch artist’s books in international perspective

Mariken Wessels' artist books Queen Ann, Who and Keepsake/Monument will be presented at the exhibition Sequence 1 – Dutch artist's books in international perspective. The exhibition, organized by Academie Minerva, Henk Woudsma and Groninger Museum, has been compiled from two extensive collections of artist's books, from private collector Henk Woudsma and the collection of the Groninger Museum. Both collections agree in one key aspect: their starting point is conceptual art from the 1960s and 70s. The collection of the Groninger Museum is limited to the period 1960-1980, an era in which the artist's book was reinvented and a foundation was laid for a new canon of the artist's book. Woudsma's collection is largely focused on the Dutch artist's book and runs until the present day.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with book descriptions and short films about all exhibited books.
